February News from Chetwyn

Happy February! This month we have complied some farm updates and a fresh and tasty salad recipe. We hope all of you have been doing well--we miss seeing you at the market!

When it Rains in February...

It's wonderful to be writing this as the rain comes down outside. I just did a loop around the grove and everything is washed clean, the leaves shine, and water droplets catch the light. The East Bay has not had rain since the start of the year, so this rain is very welcome!

On my walk, I saw that our little seasonal pond has been filled from the recent showers. A pair of Mallard ducks were swimming around in it, and I was amazed that they had already found the little pond. A pair of Mallards has appeared in the pond for the past three years, and I don't know if it's the same two ducks every time, but I'd like to think so.

We Love Our Local Community!

We have missed seeing you all at the market and are so happy when we get to see some of you when we are doing our own shopping. One of the best things about being a local vendor is that I get to see customers around town, and even on my walks in the East Bay Hills.

We are still delivering citrus to Top Hatters in San Leandro. I highly recommend stopping by and checking out their wonderful venue and outstanding made-from-scratch menu.

Organic Farming Means Seeing Cool Animals

This time of year, we are spending lots of time in the grove doing pruning and weeding. Breezes from the coast blow away the fog over the Bay and gives us an amazing view that we thoroughly enjoy every minute of our work up there. It sure makes us incredibly grateful for our little organic farm that wouldn't be possible for our customers like you!

Speaking of organic farm, we recently had our annual inspection from CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers). During the visit, we spent time walking around the farm and went over paperwork from the past year. One of the aspects we are required to keep track of is the biodiversity of the farm. This is something that is a jot for us to track, and we document with photos of birds, plants, and animals that we have found around here. To be able to go back and see the variety we have is so fun. Being organic is good for the customer, the farmer, and the life all around us.

Carrot Salad with Lemon Dressing

Avocados aren't in season, but we have plenty of fresh citrus to work with in the kitchen. This salad brings a crunch and zing that makes for an excellent side salad. We used the juice from our very own Meyer lemons for this salad.

Ingredients

1 lb peeled and grated carrots

1 Tbs lemon juice (juice from 1 lemon)
3 Tbs olive oil
¼ tsp salt
Pepper to taste
Parsley and scallions for garish (optional)

Assembly

- Combine mustard, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper in salad bowl
- Add grated carrots
- Stir together
- Refrigerate until you serve
- Just before serving add the optional parsley and scallions
